Multi Million Euro, 15-Year Security and Emergency Services Project Represents ‘A Revolution in Internal Security’
UK, 6 July 2006 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that the Portuguese government has awarded the Motorola Consortium the SIRESP (Integrated System of Portugal’s Emergency and Security Networks) project for the implementation of the Portuguese Ministry of Interior’s nationwide TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) radio system. The first phase of the system will go live at the end of June 2007 and will cover Lisbon, Setubal and Madeira. Nationwide rollout is expected by 2010.
The SIRESP project was established to enable seamless inter-agency voice and data communications across 53,500 users in the police, fire and ambulance services, as well as other public safety and civil protection agencies. Motorola’s TETRA infrastructure will support the full range of voice, data and image transmission.
The Consortium consists of Portugal Telecom, Esegur, SLN, Datacomp and Motorola, and is responsible for the rollout, operations, Managed and Professional services for the project and 15 year operation. The project will be rolled out in a succession of phases each of them embracing new users on to the network. Motorola is responsible for the TETRA Network planning, equipment supply, installation and ongoing Managed Services that will bring the project to fruition and continued operation over a 15 year operational period.
Antonio Costa, Portugal’s Minister for the Interior, said: “The SIRESP project was a lengthy and complex tender process. The Motorola Consortium was selected on the basis that it presented the most interoperable, cost effective and secure choice. For the first time, our security forces will be able to communicate seamlessly with other agencies – this represents a revolution for Portugal’s internal security and we know that Motorola has a proven track record in similar projects.”
Manuel Torres, Motorola, said: “A reliable, resilient and fully managed communications network is the key to helping the emergency services meet their targets in terms of efficiency and response times. All major services in Portugal – including GNR (National Republic Guard), PSP (Public Safety Police), INEM (National Institute for Medical Emergency) and SNBPC (National Services of Fire Brigade and Civil Protection) – will now use SIRESP for their primary communications needs. We are delighted to be making these seamless communications a reality. ”
The award sees Motorola build on its experience of providing and supporting mission and business critical communications in Portugal with previous contracts in Madeira as well as Lisbon Municipality. Motorola has a 65-year history in mission critical communications, and to date has been awarded more than 280 TETRA contracts in more than 64 countries.
